The Power Of Your Own Handwriting!

February 14th, 2019

letterwritinghistory Our company is all about creating meaningful stationery and invitations, so written correspondence comes naturally to us. I’m particularly fascinated by handwritten correspondence of historical figures of yesteryear since sending mail was (gasp!) their primary way to communicate. So when the Field House Museum in St. Louis asked me to be its guest speaker on the topic of letter writing, I was happy to oblige.   Here’s what has stuck with me since giving that speech earlier this year. Working for Kate and Andy Spade in my early 20s had a transforming effect on my career. I may not have started my own company without first experiencing their passion and hard work not to mention Kate’s ...

How To Write a Great Thank You Note

February 6th, 2019

stationery desk You can write a thank you note in less time than it takes to unload your dishwasher with these easy steps! Starting now, writing a note of thanks—to your friend, to your child’s teacher, to your boss—no longer has to feel daunting. Keep it short  If the thought of writing a thank you note makes you physically anxious, remind your brain that this is not a fight or flight situation it needs to protect you from. Three sentences is enough! Follow this general outline. Sentence #1: Thank the person for gift or thing they did for you. Sentence #2: Compliment him or her for being the kind of person who does generous things. Sentence #3: Wrap up by saying how much you appreciate the gift or gestu...

Celebrate Etiquette

August 30th, 2018

“Ladies First” is often heard around the CBP studio. Seems old-fashioned, but there are a lot of traditions when it comes to invitations and related wedding occasions. We want to share some here, but at the same time we say, “Rules are meant to be broken." We’re following the ways of yesteryear. For those individuals who want a more modern spin, we love crafting just-right wording solutions. The following is compiled from various sources. We often turn to “Crane’s Wedding Blue Book” and we toast Emily Post and all the calligraphers who have helped police our etiquette. When addressing envelopes: For an unmarried couple, living together: The lady’s name goes first. And don’t connect them w...

Cool Facts About Snail Mail!

July 26th, 2018

We love sending and receiving invitations, letters, packages, parcels and postcards. And we couldn’t do it without the U.S. Postal Service, established this day in 1775. History shows that Ben Franklin, best known as one of our founding fathers (and his work with electricity, the whole key/kite thing), played a big role in the U.S. Postal Service as the first Postmaster General. This was a result of the demand for communication during the American Revolution. Correspondence was needed between Congress and the armies. The Second Continental Congress appointed him. Ben got the job because of previous experience, he had been a postmaster for colonies in Philadelphia. In his role, he set up m...

The Write Words

June 26th, 2018

We’ve all bought an all-occasion boxed set of notecards where we've only use 60% of the notecards. I write a lot of notes, but the I’m Sorry card would always go unused. So, for the Write Words, I thought about the occasions in which people engage in written communication. And additionally, I wanted to give suggestions and templates on how to write a note. You become a more frequent writer with more practice. I write notes for a multitude of reasons... for thanks, thinking of you, just for you, congratulations, and for so many other moments and occasions. With that in mind we brainstormed copy ideas. We came up with eight different messages. Design concepts followed to include a mi...

Iconic Hotel Stationery of Yesteryear

June 15th, 2018

The one challenge of being a family of five? When traveling, you aren’t a large enough party for two hotel rooms but you’re way too crammed for one. So which route did the Berry family chose? The latter. Two double beds to accommodate our five sleepy heads. En route from St. Louis to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone to San Antonio, boy did we hit the hotels motels during our summer road trip travels. Nothing fancy – think Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson – but I do recall that each time we walked into a room, I had to open all the drawers and inventory the paper offerings. Maybe this was because there typically wasn’t a mini bar to investigate? But I’m pretty sure it was my love of statione...

Girl (Paper) Power

February 28th, 2018

It was in fifth grade when I started to really think about Girl Power. For Halloween that year, I dressed up as Olympic athlete Florence Griffith Joyner. For my costume, I cut off one leg of my Lycra pants, put on Lee press-on nails and draped DIY gold medals around my neck. While we walked the halls of the upper elementary for the school’s Halloween parade, I wanted to escape the line and take off running. FloJo’s extreme speed and femininity was a combo that I admired and sensed was unique. Living in a household of sisters where the girl to boy ratio was 4:1 – the 1 being my father – I had built-in Girl Power. My squad was always full of girls. In college, I would go on to write and des...
